How do you know when you’ve struck gold with your Halloween costume? When it goes completely viral! Denise Hill and her family became a media sensation with their golden trophy costumes. It all started with a single tweet by a family member. The photo quickly took on a life of its own. The tweet has received over 30,000 likes and more than 20,000 retweets. Media platforms took notice. Buzzfeed showcased the family declaring “We Can All Stop Trying Because This Family Just Won Halloween.” In addition to the social media flutter, they have been featured on their local ABC and Fox television stations and in The Kansas City Star. We’re thrilled that Mehron helped play a part in this sensational look.
Every year Ms. Hill plans out the costumes for her family and takes an annual Halloween portrait. Quite the planner, she usually has an idea in place well over a month before the holiday. This year, the Halloween snuck up on her. It was almost a month out and she had no idea what the family was doing to dress up as. While searching online for some inspiration, she found a picture of a family dressed like golden sports trophies. Ms. Hill realized she had almost everything she needed to make the costumes quickly and inexpensively. So she got to work spray painting her 8-year-old daughter Aspen’s soccer uniform, 5-year-old daughter Denver’s ballerina tutu, 15-year-old daughter’s track uniform, and her own tennis outfit.
Now she just needed the makeup to complete the look. Ms. Hill had ordered some makeup online, but it didn’t arrive in time. In a panic, she called U.S. Toys who advised her that they had something that would be perfect for the costume. When she arrived at the store, a helpful salesperson in the costume department showed her Paradise Makeup AQ in Brilliant Gold and demonstrated how to apply it. She also recommended brushing on Gold Metallic Powder once the makeup was dry for a shimmery shine. “I really liked the products,” said Ms. Hill. “They went on well and were easy to remove, even in the hair. I was impressed. My middle child has allergies and sensitive skin and she did not have any reaction to the makeup, so we used it a lot this season. Between the family portrait, parties, and trick-or-treating, I applied the products as part of our costume five times.”
As proven by the media’s reaction, the end result was spectacular! Ms. Hill knew something was happening when her daughter called from school and asked her what she did. By then word of the costumes took off took off like wildfire. Although there were no Halloween prizes at school this year, Ms. Hill says the photo going viral, the media coverage, and people recognizing them has been the real prize.
